Rd 2: Koelle A:
Some real surprises in Round 2, with Ricky Wang drawing against Bas Van Riel and Terrance continuing to terrorise our experienced players with a win over Kevin Perrin being the main exceptions. The juniors are certainly on a roll, but as we move into the later rounds, their opposition will only get tougher. Heading into Round 3, only Declan, Scott and Terrance remain on perfect scores, setting up an exciting battle at the top of the standings.

Koelle B:
Round 2 of Koelle B featured plenty of tough battles, but the top seeds largely managed to hold their ground. One notable exception was Johan Stanley, who scored an impressive win over Danielle Moon. Perhaps his recent participation in the Country Championships helped him find his form! With four players still on perfect scores, the tournament remains wide open, and there are plenty of games ahead to find the winner.

Koelle A:
A strong field is battling it out in Koelle A this year, led by CM Declan Smith and Scott Stewart. With more juniors than ever competing thanks to our junior coaching program led by Scott and Kevin, the future is looking bright for Ballarat chess. These juniors aren’t here just for the experience — Ricky Wang defeated Sam Song and Terrance Wang overcame Robert Loveband on boards 3 and 4, producing the two biggest upsets of the round.

The standout game of the night was the clash between Michael Leckie and Scott Stewart. The game began with a French Defence, not one of Scott’s usual choices. Michael chose an unusual closed system that worked brilliantly, securing a crushing advantage by move 16. He continued to press and looked close to victory after fighting through Scott’s determined defence.

However, just as the win seemed within reach, Michael blundered with 43. Rf4??, allowing 43...Rxf4 44. Qxf4 Ne2+!, a decisive knight fork that ended the game instantly. A heartbreaking finish after such a promising performance. The remaining results followed seeding, but the juniors have already shown they are more than capable of challenging the established players.

Koelle B:
Results favoured the higher seeds this round, with all favourites winning thanks to the Swiss pairings. With a long tournament ahead, there is still plenty of time for upsets to shake up the standings.
