20/06/2019: Interschool Chess Tournament at Ballarat Clarendon College

The latest Ballarat interschool chess tournament was once again held at Ballarat Clarendon College and again run by ChessKids. In total there were 131 players, 70 in the Primary division, 34 in the Middle years and 27 in the Open Secondary, with several of the chess clubs younger players participating. In the Primary division, the clubs' very own Leonard Goodison came first overall with at perfect score of 7/7 followed closely behind by Justin Goodison on 6.5/7 taking the top two places over 68 other players. Andrew Wang also scored well with 5.5/7 taking fourth place overall. In terms of schools, Mt Blowhard placed first, Ballarat Clarendon College placed second and Candlebark placed third.

In the Middle years, Dan Wang was another club player scoring a perfect score of 7/7, coming equal first, but due to tiebreaks, placed second overall. Kalen Douglas also scored well with a reputable score of 5/7. For the schools, Clarendon came first, Candlebark came second and Mt Clear came third.

For the Open Secondary, Sean Macak came equal first (first overall with tiebreaks), unbeaten with a score of 6.5/7. Dylan Douglas came equal third with a strong 6/7 (third overall with tiebreaks) and Louis Douglas scored a good 5/7. Clarendon's strong performance earned them first place, Mt Clear came second and St Patricks College came third.

Overall, a good day was had by all the players, with everyone looking forward to the next tournament.

29/3/19: Interschool tournament at Ballarat Clarendon College

ChessKids hold tournaments for schools throughout Victoria over the year, and the first one was run successfully at College at the end of March. 38 open secondary, 45 middle year, and 82 primary students filled the Sewell Pavillion with the sound of thinking and the tap of chess clocks. In the senior division, Ballarat Chess Club players dominated with Sean Macak (Mt Clear College), coming through unscathed with a perfect 7 point score, followed by Louis and Dylan Douglas (College) on 5.5. College's team took the group medal, with their top four players scoring 21 points, only 1 point ahead of the Mt Clear team.

In the middle year section, College overwhelmed Mt Clear, Trinity Colac and Bacchus Marsh Grammar, with Ballarat Chess Club player Kalen Douglas being one of 4 players with perfect scores. The teams gold and silver both went to College teams.

In the largest section, the primary school level, our two club players, Justin and Leonard Goodison (Mt Blowhard) took gold and silver respectively, and their team, including Cameron Frame, earned the Teams medals. Justin was the only player on a perfect score.
